Farm Stand Attendant 2019
Upswing Farm is seeking one or two seasonal employees to join the farm’s sales and distribution team. This role is primarily responsible for managing distribution of CSA Shares and farm stand sales, with additional responsibilities in the greenhouse and some harvest and wash as needed. The right candidates will be excited about working on a small, diversified farm and eager to assist customers. This position requires independent work, self-motivation and strong communication skills.
Start date: May 1st (somewhat flexible for a later start date)
End date: September 30th (flexible, but preference will be given to candidates who can work until the end of September)
Schedule: Tuesday-Friday 11:30am-6:30pm. There is the opportunity to pick up some morning field crew shifts as well. Applicants who are still in high school may be able to take short shifts to accommodate school hours.
Responsible for assisting the farmers in all aspects of:
CSA Share Distribution and Farm Stand Sales: maintain attractive display, help and educate customers, promote produce, complete sales transactions
Greenhouse Work: filling and seeding trays, plant propagation and watering
Field Work (optional, but we prefer candidates who are willing to take at least one shift in the field each week): Harvest • Washing and Packing • Planting • Cultivation including Hoeing and Hand Weeding • Mulching, Trellising and Pruning
Skills and Competencies:
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to work independently/ self-motivated
Ability to do fast, quality, detailed work
Ability to lift and carry 40-50lbs repeatedly
Willing to work in all weather conditions
Good communication skills
Ability to receive and digest plenty of constructive feedback
Interest in all aspects of vegetable production and sales
Culinary experience/interest in cooking with local produce a plus
Previous farming experience is not required. However, candidates without farmer references should be able to demonstrate their ability to work in a farm environment through other relevant experience. All candidates will be asked to come to the farm for a working interview before being hired.
Compensation: $12-$15/hour depending on experience
Benefits: This position includes a Large Summer CSA Share, plus extra produce when available.
